The fair uses a computer program to control and manage the entry information, prepare entry forms and tags and process the judging results for payment of the premiums. All entries must be pre-registered by using the entry forms found in the fair premium books and postmarked by July 21st. No opening day entries will be accepted.

BAKING CONTESTS

20th ANNUAL BLUE RIBBON APPLE PIE CONTEST

PRIZES: 1st - $25; 2nd - $20; 3rd - $15

  1. Open to any individual who is a Pennsylvania resident; one entry per person.
  2. Entry to be a pie that must include at least 60% apples i nthe filling. It does not need to be a "traditional" two crusted apple pie and it can have a variety of fillings.
  3. The entire pie must be submitted for judging in a disposable pie pan.
  4. Recipe must be submitted with the entry for the pie and pie crust, printed on one side of 8 �� x 11� paper. Recipe must list all ingredients, quantities, and the preparation instructions. Entrant�s name, address and phone number must be printed on the back side of all the pages.
  5. Refrigeration is not available at the Fair or PA Farm Show. Entries that require refrigeration after baking must indicate so in the recipe. Those entries will not be sold, auctioned or otherwise distributed for consumption after judging for food safety reasons.
  6. Judging will be based on the following criteria:
    Flavor 30 points
    Filling: consistency, doneness, moistness & flavor 25 points
    Crust: color, flavor, texture, doneness 20 points
    Overall Appearance 15 points
    Creativity 10 points
  7. First Place Winner is eligible for the 2008 PA Farm Show competition.
    Prizes for the PA State Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Winners:
    First Place : $160

    Fifth Place : $35

    HERSHEY COCOA CLASSIC

    CHOCOLATE CAKE BAKING CONTEST RULES

    PRIZES: 1st-$50; 2nd - $40; 3rd - $15

    1. Open to any individual who is a Carbon County or West Penn Township, Schuylkill County resident.
    2. Entry must be a Layered Cake made from "scratch" and frosted.
    3. A minimum of 1/4 cup of HERSHEY'S COCOA must be used and listed as "HERSHEY'S COCOA" in the recipe.
    4. If the cake frosting is chocolate, HERSHEY'S COCOA must be used and listed as "HERSHEY'S COCOA" in the recipe.
    5. NEW! Any Cake entry that requires refrigeration after baking will NOT be accepted for food safety reasons (ex: no whipping cream, frozen toppings, cream cheese, custards, etc).
    6. Cake entry must be submitted for judging on cardboard.
    7. Recipe(s) listing the ingredients and the preparation instructions must be submitted with the entry (printed on one-side of 8-1/2 X 11" size paper).
    8. Judging will be based on the following criteria:
      Overall Appearance 25 points
      Consistency (Size and Shape) 15 points
      Moistness and Crumb 20 points
      Flavor 30 points
      Topping or Icing 10 points
      TOTAL 100 points

    First Place Winner is eligible for 2007 PA Farm Show competition. Prizes for the PA State Hershey Cocoa Cake Winners: 1st - $500; 2nd - $250; 3rd - $100

    Angel Food Contest

    PRIZES: 1st-$25; 2nd - $20; 3rd - $15

    CONTEST RULES

    1. Open to any individual who is a Carbon County or West Penn Township, Schuylkill County resident.
    2. Entry must be an Angel Food Cake made from scratch.
    3. Pennsylvania Egg Quality Assurance Program (PEQAP) eggs must be used in cake, the PEQAP symbol from the egg carton must be submitted along with the entry.
    4. New! Any Cake entry that requires refrigeration after baking will NOT be accepted for food safety reasons (ex: no whipping cream, frozen toppings, cream cheese, custards, etc).
    5. Cake entry must be submitted for judging on cardboard.
    6. Recipe(s) listing the ingredients and the preparation instructions must be submitted with the entry (printed on one-side of 8-1/2 X 11" size paper).
    7. Cakes will be judged on the following percentages:
      20 points - Overall Appearance (surface, size, color)
      25 points - Inside Characteristics (texture, crunch, lightness)
      30 points - Flavor (smell, taste, flavoring)
      15 points - Creativity
      10 points - Topping, Icing or Decoration

    First place winner is eligible for the 2007 PA Farm Show competition.

    Prizes for the PA FARM SHOW WINNERS: 1st - $500; 2nd - $250; 3rd - $100

    2007 Fun Safety Poster Contest

    PRIZES: 1st - $10; 2nd - $8; 3rd - $6

    The Bureau of Ride & Measurement Standards under the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture will conduct a statewide poster contest at the agriculture fairs or any participating schools during 2007. Each fair/school should hold its own contest and submit one certified poster from each age group tot he state level for additional judging and cash prizes.

    CONTEST RULES

    1. Only one poster may be submitted per student, per age group. There will be three state competitions: ages 8-11, 12-14, and 15-18. Students must be in one of these age groups during 2007 to qualify.
    2. The poster size must be 14-1/2 X 22 inches, equivalent one-half of a standard poster board. Other sizes will not be accepted for judging at the state level.
    3. This year's theme is "Fun & Safety On The Fairgrounds." Students should use this theme on their poster and illustrate the interdependence between riders and rides
    4. Only one poster per age group per fair may be forwarded for the state competition. EACH FAIR SECRETARY IS RESPONSIBLE FOR SENDING THE POSTER AND CERTIFICATION FOR EACH AGE GROUP TO: The Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Ride & Measurements Standards, 2301 North Cameron Street, Harrisburg, PA 17110-9408.
    5. Poster will be evaluated on use of the theme, visual appearance and creativity in relation to the exhibitor's age.
    6. Checks for $100, $75, and $50 will be presented by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture to the top three individuals during the Pennsylvania State Farm Show in 2008. Winners will be notified in advance and invited to attend an awards presentation.
