     Honeybees, the backbone of agriculture

Did you know that honeybees account for 80% of all insect pollination?  Without such pollination, we would see a significant decrease in the number of fruits and vegetables produced.   Bees collect 66 lbs of pollen each year per hive and the honeybee uses pollen as a food, as it is one of the richest and purest natural food available.  Its facts like these that Pennsylvania’s 2011 Honey Queen, Teresa Bryson, educates our public about on a daily basis.

Teresa is the 19 year old daughter of Tom and Linda Bryson from Chambersburg, PA.  She is a junior at Hagerstown Community College, with double majors in English and Forensic Science.  Teresa has been a 4-H member for the past ten years, including serving as a youth instructor.  In her free time, Teresa enjoys reading sewing, working in the family apiary (beehives) and caring for the many animals on her family’s small farm.

As the 2010 PA Honey Queen, Bryson is a state-wide spokesperson on behalf of the Pennsylvania State Beekeepers Association.  She travels throughout the state promoting the beekeeping and honey industries by attending schools, fairs, festivals and participating in media interviews.  In addition, Bryson will represent Pennsylvania in 2011 as she competes for the American Honey Queen title in Galveston, Texas.

This is the first year the Honey Queen will be visiting our fair, states Alicia Silliman, Fair Board member who arranged the visit.  Plan to meet Teresa and learn about bee keeping and the production of honey as she appears at the Carbon County Fair.
